Global digital and smart mobility leader announced as new Oxbotica CEO

Oxbotica, the leader in autonomous vehicle software, today announces the appointment of Ozgur Tohumcu as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). He succeeds Dr Graeme Smith, who moves internally to the position of SVP of External Affairs.

Mr Tohumcu was previously CEO of Tantalum, the connected car services and payments provider. During his leadership between 2017 and 2018, he drove the deployment of Tantalum’s connected car software as a service (SaaS) platform, launching services across the US with tier one automotive and telco customers.

Prior to that, he was responsible for Ericsson’s digital and IoT business across Europe, leading major digital transformation programmes in customer experience management, network virtualisation and transformation. He has over 20 years’ experience managing the development and implementation of complex software solutions within the automotive, smart mobility, telecoms and digital industries.

As CEO, Mr Tohumcu will be responsible for driving the strategy to deliver Oxbotica’s ‘Universal Autonomy’ vision globally with customers and deployments across industries where autonomy will be a key enabler.

The appointment marks the next stage of Oxbotica’s rapid international growth. It follows a number of other key announcements, including the completion of a £14 million funding round in September 2018 and a strategic partnership with Addison Lee to collaborate on the deployment of autonomous vehicle services. The business is also moving into new headquarters at the end of May to accommodate a workforce that has more than doubled in the last year—and will double again in the coming months.

Mr Tohumcu will spearhead a highly experienced and diverse leadership team, comprising of some of the leading figures in robotics, mobility and autonomy.

Oxbotica’s software uses the latest in computer vision, machine learning and artificial intelligence to enable vehicles to operate autonomously in any environment and on any terrain. Its infrastructure-free, localisation software is already deployed in multiple industry-leading international customer projects in vehicles on roads in complex urban environments. In addition to working with Addison Lee, Oxbotica leads the government-backed DRIVEN consortium and already operates its own fleet of autonomous vehicles in London and Oxford.

Ozgur Tohumcu, CEO of Oxbotica, said:

“I’m thrilled to be joining Oxbotica at such an exciting time in its growth journey. In a short time, the business has already become Europe’s leading autonomous vehicle software provider—and the opportunities for further rapid expansion are endless. Many industries are primed for autonomy and Oxbotica has a world-changing vision and game-changing software. I’m looking forward to leading the fantastic Oxbotica team through the next stage of their global expansion journey.”

Professor Paul Newman, founder of Oxbotica, said:

“We’re excited to have Ozgur onboard and look forward to embedding his widespread technology and automotive experience into Oxbotica’s business strategy. The new leadership structure will ensure we are able to continue pushing the boundaries of autonomy across industries and markets.”
